International events since September 11th had put Muslims and Muslim communities under the glare of a media spotlight.  

The project that led to ‘Citizenship and Muslim Perspectives’ responded to an interest expressed by many teachers, particularly those who were themselves not Muslim, in exploring Muslim perspectives.  Their discussions highlighted both the implications for our professional role and practical classroom approaches. We are bombarded with words and images that give powerful messages about Islam and Muslim communities, but that often reinforce difference and divisions.  Young people of all faiths and cultures are growing up in this context.  This is an ongoing challenge for teachers and schools.
